On May 19, 2023, the American University Kyiv (AUK), a unique institution in Ukrainian higher education, inaugurated its new president, Dan Rice. The event took place at the university's newly reconstructed campus, symbolizing a significant milestone for Ukrainian national identity and higher education models.
AUK, with its mission of creating a unique model of higher education, was established with the goal of building a future-oriented, internationally recognized multidisciplinary institution. It offers an American-style education, integrating innovative global-level education and advanced scientific research. This endeavor is supported by partnerships with Arizona State University (ASU) and the American company Cintana Education.
Thanks to the ASU partnership, AUK students have the chance to acquire a double degree through synchronization and mutual recognition of the educational programs. The university also has the autonomy to create its own programs and courses, drawing on ASU's innovative remote learning methods.
Despite the challenges posed by the Russian military invasion on Ukraine in 2022, AUK managed to launch its inaugural academic year, offering programs in "Global Management", "Business Administration", and "Software Engineering". Additionally, AUK introduced an English proficiency course - the AUK Foundation Program - to prepare students for an English-language academic environment.
AUK's faculty comprises leading scientists from around the world with rich teaching experiences from top universities in the US and Europe. The institution also collaborates with leading organizations for market trend insights, thus tailoring its education to real-world needs.
Despite interruptions from ongoing conflicts, the opening of the campus was celebrated heartily by students, faculty, and partners alike. Distinguished guests such as Kurt Walker, co-founder of AUK, Mayor of Kyiv Vitaliy Klitschko, and President Andriy Gunder of the American Chamber of Commerce in Ukraine also attended the inauguration.
The inaugural ceremony marked the transition of leadership from founding president Rick Shangraw to Dan Rice. The speeches delivered acknowledged the resilience and dedication of the AUK community during the war and highlighted the belief in the transformative power of education.
AUK is poised to grow, unveiling new programs like "Global Technologies and Economic Development", "Technological Leadership and Artificial Intelligence" for fall 2023. With an international faculty and joint programs with ASU, the university is determined to become a beacon of education, reflecting international support for Ukraine's battle for a brighter future.
